Development of the Australian curriculum

In June 2009, ACARA published the Curriculum Development Process which describes the process used to develop the Australian curriculum. The document also describes the structure of writing teams and advisory groups involved in curriculum development.

The Curriculum Development Process, outlines four stages in the development of the Australian curriculum.

       Curriculum Shaping Stage

This first stage involves the development of a Shape of the Australian Curriculum paper. . Expert advice is sought in the development of an initial draft shape paper which is endorsed by ACARA’s Board for release for wide public consultation. Following modification of the draft in the light of consultation feedback, a final shape paper goes through an approval process for publication on ACARA’s website. The shape paper presents a broad outline of the curriculum K-12 and curriculum design advice for the learning area.

       Curriculum Writing Stage

Teams of writers, supported by expert advisory panels and ACARA curriculum staff, develop the Australian curriculum. This includes content descriptions and achievement standards K-12.  Writers are guided by ACARA’s  Curriculum Design Paper  and advice from the ACARA Board. Writers will also refer to national and international curriculum and assessment research, state and territory curriculum materials, and research on the general capabilities described within the Shape of the Australian Curriculum. The draft Australian curriculum for the learning area is released for public consultation and subsequent modification in the light of feedback.

The writing stage culminates in publication of the Australian curriculum for the learning area.

       Implementation Stage

The Australian curriculum is then delivered in an online environment for school authorities, schools and teachers for implementation. ACARA works with state and territory curriculum and school authorities to develop implementation plans.

       Evaluation and Review Stage

Processes are put in place to monitor and review the Australian curriculum based on implementation feedback.
